The Cultural Impact of The Eras Tour

Gabe Miño

Debuting in March 2023, The Eras Tour continues to transcend the boundaries of what a

traditional stadium concert looks like. Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift is the mind behind the ingenious The Eras Tour and takes fans into a journey that covers over 17 years of music and her 10 studio albums. With more than 150 shows across five continents, an economic boost for every city it touches, and a concert film grossing nearly $250 million worldwide, the The Eras Tour is the highest grossing tour that is more than just a concert but is a cultural global phenomenon.

At each city, Taylor Swift takes fans through her musical evolution through her performance in a staggering three and a half hour setlist that is divided into fiscting “eras.” From the country-infused Fearless to the synth pop world of 1989, each act of the show is a new world that fans are able to immerse themselves in, complete with costumes, elaborate stage props, and cinematic stage visuals. However, one of the most anticipated moments of the entire concert for fans is the act called surprise songs. Where two songs, not a part of the setlist, are played on the guitar and on the piano. These surprise songs fuel endless speculation and social media frenzy on what the singer will play next. It goes as far back as fans tracking which songs remain unplayed in hopes of hearing a favorite and rare song.

Outside of the stadium, The Eras Tour’s effects on the world have been staggering and completely unprecedented. In the U.S. alone, Taylor Swift’s concerts have brought billions of dollars into local economies as fans flood cities to see the pop star. In 2023, the Federal Reserve noted her impact on inflation metrics in major cities like Chicago. In addition, the resale prices of tickets to The Eras Tour has exceeded $10,000 which has intensified discussions about ticketing monopolies. And thanks to Taylor Swift, this has prompted Congress to hold Congressional hearings on Live Nation and Ticketmaster to make sure that $10,000 tickets are not being sold for resale.

Beyond its distinct footprint in the actual world, The Eras Tour has created a unique sense of community among fans, unique to the fandoms of other artists. One of the most famous things that fans do to unite one another follows a lyric from the song You’re On Your Own Kid from Taylor Swift’s 10th studio album, Midnights. The lyric says “Make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it” which prompted concertgoers to exchange handcrafted friendship bracelets with other Swifties. Every friendship bracelet is crafted uniquely and is themed to a Taylor Swift song or album. These friendship bracelets are one of the most unique things of The Eras Tour and are one of the most significant symbols of Taylor Swift.

As Taylor Swift prepares for the 2024 international leg, with stops in Asia, Europe, and South America, fans are excited to see what more The Eras Tour will offer. Nevertheless, it is clear that this tour is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for fans and, as the highest-grossing tour ever, is one of the most cultural significant moments of this decade and will remain in the history books forever.
